My Top 10 Things to Do in Samos, Ranked
Here is my ranked shortlist of the top ten things to do in Samos, from a 2,500-year-old engineering marvel to a boat day on turquoise water. Samos is Greece's sixth-largest island, green, mountainous and closer to Turkey than to Athens. Pythagorio's Tunnel of Eupalinos tops the list in 2026; Ephesus, mountain villages, beaches and wine follow.

Number one goes to the Tunnel of Eupalinos, the sixth-century BC aqueduct driven roughly a kilometre through the mountain from both ends. Then add Pythagorio itself — UNESCO-listed, with the Pythagoras statue and harbour tavernas — and go in the morning.
Twenty minutes away, the Heraion pairs into the same UNESCO day: one lone re-erected column marks the vast temple of Hera. Allow one to two hours; check opening hours on site.
Kokkari, 10 km from Vathy, is the prettiest harbour on the north coast and Samos's windsurfing centre. Tsamadou's clear water and cheap sunbeds on Kokkari Bay make a full day; shift swims when the meltemi blows hard.
Boats leave Pythagorio's pier each morning for Samiopoula, whose Psalida beach holds fine white sand. Platform-booked tours run from about €64 with lunch; Captain Andreas, beside the frozen-yoghurt stand, charges less if you pay cash in person. Confirm each skipper's route the day before.
Potami waterfalls, near Karlovasi, reward a short gorge walk: wear grippy soles, the rocks are slick. Stronger walkers can extend to Mikro and Megalo Seitani, about 1 hr 30 min through plane trees. Go in the morning for shade and quiet.
Drive slowly up Mount Ambelos to Manolates and Vourliotes, stone villages above the same vine terraces, the pezoules, behind item eight. Time the loop for a taverna lunch in Manolates; half a day, or an evening run from the north coast.
Ephesus is the most ambitious entry: a full, long day crossing to Kusadasi for the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. Samos wine deserves its own slot: Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grown on those Ambelos terraces since at least the sixteenth century. The Museum of Samos Wine sits on Vathy's outskirts, with tastings from about €22 though hours wobble, so check ahead — more in my Samos wine tours guide.
9. Psili Amos & Mykali Beaches
If you're travelling with kids, Psili Amos near Marathokampos is the island's most forgiving beach: soft sand, shallow water and hardly any current. Note there are two of them — the southern twin sits near Pythagorio. I arrived before 11:00 and had it almost to myself; sunbeds are entirely free if you buy drinks. Mykali, 20–30 minutes away, makes a quieter afternoon. This is my number nine. Give Samos three to five days in 2026 and you can comfortably tick off everything on this short list. I'd base in Pythagorio or Kokkari for the east and beaches, Vathy for wine and ferries. I take no bookings, but my where to stay and things to do guides are free.
